Effect of Self-Instructional Module on Skills of Caregivers of Children with Cerebral Palsy

Abstract: Because Cerebral Palsy is a handicapping condition with known CNS aetiology, it is essential to assess, monitor, and provide interventions to promote development and acquisition of skills, thus optimizing potential. Purpose To study the effect of self-instructional module on skills of caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy. Objectives To assess the effect of self-instructional module on skills of caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy. Material and methods This was a quantitative descriptive survey pilot study with pre-test and post-test research design. The sample size was 10 caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy and consists of one group of caregivers. Purposive sampling technique was used for the selection of sample. The group was having 10 samples and received information booklet as an intervention in Bharati Hospital, Pune during February 2015 to Jun 2015. Tool was developed in two parts, first was demographic data of the caregivers, second self reported practice questionnaire. Skills of caregivers before and after administration of Information Booklet were assessed in five aspects carrying and positioning, communication, feeding, activities of daily living, and use of assistive devices. Results Majority of children with Cerebral Palsy were males while female with Cerebral Palsy included a small population and none of these children had other siblings affected by Cerebral Palsy. The mean skills score from 52.8 % in the pre-test to 68 % in the post-test. Skills of caregivers before and after administration of Information Booklet were assessed in 5 aspects carrying and positioning, communication, feeding, activities of daily living, and use of assistive devices. Distributions of subjects during post-test were higher as compared during pre-test in each aspect. Conclusion They study concluded that there was a significant increase in the skills of caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy.
