Statistical Analysis of Meteorological Data over Western India
Devanshu Agarwal, Faraz Mazhar
Abstract: Monthly precipitation data of 70-80E, 20-25N was studied and analyzed which includes western Indian parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. This data was sourced from NASA’s GES-DISC Interactive Online Visualization and Analysis Infrastructure (Giovanni) which displays Earth science data from NASA satellites directly on the internet. Exploratory data analysis was conducted to find trends and insights pertaining to rainfall over the region. Standard deviation from mean annual rainfall value for 1980-1994 is noticeably higher compared to that of 1995-2010 which clearly indicates that variability in rainfall has decreased considerably over the years although mean rainfall figures are nearly the same. The anomalies in rainfall figures of 1994 and that of 2002 were found where excessive rainfall was observed in 1994 and drought in 2002. Reasons for the same is also discussed.
