Abstract: The article discusses politeness with the focus on negative politeness in communication viewed from different angles and presents the negative politeness strategies which are used to preserve the other’s negative face in inviting and declining invitations by Vietnamese and American people, based on the framework by Brown, P. and Levinson, S and Quang, N.
