Between Ambition and Reality: A Comparative Analysis of the First Five - Year - Plan of the Soviet Union and the Great Leap Forward of China
Elizabeth Zhao
Abstract: At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, communist economic models began to rival capitalism. People?s embitterment with totalitarian regimes espousing free market principles gave birth to revolutionary movements which eventually toppled the Tsar of Russia and brought Communism to China. However, regimes brought to power following revolutions do not necessarily bring political, social and economic benefits to the denizens they purportedly represent. We see examples of these dysfunctional post - revolution governments going back centuries. One notorious such regime followed the French Revolution, whose lofty goals were betrayed by Maximilien Robespierre?s ambition, leading to the Reign of Terror in the late 1700s.
