Effect of Self Instructional Module on Knowledge Regarding Medico Legal Responsibilities among Nurses

Abstract: The patient is considered the consumer of nursing & health care, along with this fact, there is growing awareness of the law by the public, an understanding of the medico legal responsibilities is becoming more important. OBJECTIVES: To assess the knowledge on medico legal aspects related to cancer among nurses before and after introduction of self instructional and to find association between the knowledge score with selected demographic variables. METHODOLOGY-one group pretest-post test design was used, on 50 staff nurses at tertiary care hospital. RESULTS-The majority (88 %) of the participants were female 70 % of the total samples did not attend any in service education regarding medico legal responsibilities of nurses, & 96 % of them were never involved in a medico legal case. The findings showed that staff nurses have deficit knowledge regarding medico legal responsibilities in care of cancer patient. There was a significant association between the level of knowledge of the staff nurses and their professional qualification. There was a significant difference between pretest and posttest mean knowledge scores CONCLUSION- The findings imply that a specialized training program intended to impart knowledge regarding medico legal responsibilities to the staff Nurses need to be organized and implemented. It will in turn help her in acquiring a better efficiency & vigil in her services.
