Critical Evaluation of Children and Human Rights

K. Illakiya, S. Kanchana Ratnam

Abstract: Childhood is universal transcend to all nationalities and know no artificial boundaries. The healthy development of children is crucial to the future well-being of any society. The UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child which is the first international treaty that defines the basic rights of the children. A Safe Childhood is a human right. Across the world children are denied their human rights, including for example, their right to education. They are recruited into armed forces. They are subjected to the death penalty, are disappeared, are punished by cruel and inhuman methods and suffer many other forms of violence. The aim of this study is to critically evaluate how effectively the child rights violation can be prevented and to provide the needed directions to the parents and Government about their responsibilities to guarantee the rights of the child and also to reduce the vulnerability of children in harmful situations. The results revealed that children are not aware of their basic human rights; childrens views and opinions are rarely heard and expressed at home and in schools, in local communities and even in governments children views go unheard on many important issues that affect them.
