Knowledge and Practice on Safety measures among Fishermen of Udupi District

Abstract: The International Lobour Organization has estimated that, 24, 000 fatalities and 24 million nonfatal injuries occur worldwide each year among fishermen. Objective: To assess the knowledge and practice on safety measures among fishermen Materials and methods: Descriptive survey design was used. A non- probability convenient sampling technique was used to select 80 samples and data collected from them by using structured knowledge questionnaire and practice scale on safety measures related to fishing. The adults were between the age group of 20-50 years, available in fishing harbour of Malpe. Data was collected from fishermen, available in Malpe harbor through interview technique. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Majority of fishermen had average knowledge (78.8 %), and only 10 % of subjects had poor knowledge on safety measures.48.8 % fishermen had favourable safety practice.
