Credit Facilities and Provision of Housing Units in Nairobi and Surrounding Areas: Case of Shelter-Afrique
Vanlier Kontchou Guy Rene, Gerald Kalenywa Atheru
Abstract: Access to housing is a basic human right enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals and Kenyas Constitution 2010. The study determined the effect of THE COMPANY FOR HABITAT AND HOUSING IN AFRICA (SHELTER-AFRIQUE) on the provision of housing in Nairobi and its surrounding areas during the periods 2010 to 2015, through credit facilities granted to its clients. The study employed descriptive research design with ten (10) of SHELTER-AFRIQUE clients in Nairobi, Kenya, including Developers, Commercial Banks, Micro-Finance Institutions and/or Housing Finance Institutions. The results showed that Developers, Commercial Banks, Micro-Finance Institutions, and Housing Finance Institutions have positively benefited from the partnership with SHELTER-AFRIQUE and have increased their capacity to provide housing units in Nairobi and its environs. The number of housing units they built increased significantly for the period they have partnered with SHELTER-AFRIQUE. It is evident from the results that SHELTER-AFRIQUE is playing a vital role in the provision of housing units in Nairobi and its surrounding areas. It is a clear indication that continued partnership between SHELTER-AFRIQUE, Developers, Commercial Banks, Micro-Finance Institutions, and Housing Finance Institutions will play a major role in solving the problem of shortage of housing units in Nairobi.
