A Review of Potential Health Benefits and Therapeutic Applications of Psyllium (Plantago ovata) Husk in Disease Management
Deepika Pal
Abstract: Psyllium husk, derived from the Plantago ovata plant, is a soluble dietary fibre commonly used as a laxative and to promote bowel regularity. Dietary fibres from psyllium husk (Isabgol) possess pharmaceutical properties and are extensively used in the food industry. However, recent studies have suggested that psyllium husk may offer a range of health benefits beyond its traditional use. Several papers were reviewed to explore the potential therapeutic applications of psyllium husk in disease management, focusing on its positive effects on various health conditions including weight loss, constipation, diarrhoea, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and heart disease.
