STATCOM Based Near Optimal Pi Controllers for High Efficiency Hybrid Renewable Electric Systems
Haccholi Teja, Dr. V. Usha Reddy
Abstract: Wind energy technology has become a crucial and economically viable power source, especially as global electricity demand rises and fossil fuel use declines. This paper introduces a Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) voltage regulator controlled by difference optimization to improve hybrid renewable energy systems, particularly those integrating wind energy conversion systems (WECS) and photovoltaics (PV). Increasing renewable grid connections is essential to meet high electricity demand and reduce environmental impacts; however, these hybrid systems often face challenges from harsh environmental conditions, such as storms, that can degrade WECS performance. Additionally, faults like three-phase faults may disconnect some renewable energy sources (RES) from the grid. This study uses a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to enhance the hybrid system's resilience, allowing continuous operation even under high winds or faults at the point of common coupling (PCC). The STATCOM, governed by PI controllers, regulates reactive power flow and stabilizes PCC voltage. The Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is employed to optimize the STATCOM?s PI controllers, enhancing the overall hybrid system?s performance. The hybrid system, comprising a switched reluctance generator-based WECS and PV system, is modeled and tested in MATLAB Simulink.
