Esophagopleural Fistula due to Ingestion of Corrosive Substance
Dr. Yash Heda, Dr. Shyam Sobti, Dr. Madan Manmohan
Abstract: Esophago-pleural fistula is a rare but serious condition resulting from various causes, including esophageal malignancies, surgical complications, irradiation, iatrogenic factors, and corrosive substance injury. This case report details the development of an esophago-pleural fistula in a 14-year-old boy following the accidental ingestion of caustic soda. Despite initial management with antibiotics, the patient continued to experience symptoms such as fever and dysphagia. Imaging studies, including a CT scan and esophagogram, confirmed the presence of the fistula and associated hydropneumothorax. The patient underwent esophageal stenting, which led to significant improvement. This case highlights the importance of considering esophageal injury in patients with a history of corrosive ingestion and persistent symptoms, and the critical role of imaging in diagnosing esophago-pleural fistula.
