Crisis of Civil Consciousness and Decline of Democracy
Dr. Biswajit Baidya
Abstract: The value of freedom, respect for human rights and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy. In turn, democracy provides an environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. The serious challenges that democracy faces in different countries of the world for smooth running of government at least one - fourth of the earth is still not under democratic governments. Poverty? health care, low literacy rate, over population, unemployment are prevalent in most parts of India, hampering national progress, caste and gender discrimination continues to prevail in Indian society. Democracy has been on the decline globally for 20 consecutive years. Indian democracy mirrors a similar trend, with increasing public distrust in government, rising polarizations, and growing disinformation and other threats from rapid advances in technology; all of which sound the alarm bell that such division has made it difficult for diverse peoples living in the India to listen to each other and find common ground. Nirodh C., said that the rule of the best leaders is necessary for the achievement of excellence of civilization, so also for degradation without the role or contribution of the ruler of the opposite character.
