Serum Sialic Acid Levels in Diabetic Subjects: A Promising Screening Tool for Microvascular & Macrovascular Complications in Diabetes

Anirban Poddar, Subhashree Ray

Abstract: Serum sialic acid is an integral part of the membrane of red blood cells. Therefore any vascullar damage or jeopardy resulting in disruption of erythrocyte membrane is associated with liberation of sialic acid in blood. thus monitoring levels of sialic acid might serve as an important tool for diagnosis of inflammatory and vascular jeopardy in patients with diabetes.
